Almost all patio door issues come from the door wheels or rollers wearing down. A large number of patio doors are opened on a regular basis. As a result of this frequent use, the door will require routine maintenance to enable it to easily roll open and shut. Debris including dried up leaves, dead insects and also pet hair can easily clog up the patio door wheels inside the door track, making the moving panel very difficult to shut. It is possible to remove the debris, however, if that does not improve its movement, the fast solution would be to change the old rollers for brand new ones. If allowed to remain unmaintained the wheels will sooner or later stick or seize up. This tends to result in wear to the track and in some cases leads to ireperable damage.

Locking problems are also an indication of Patio Wheel wear. Try locking the door in the open position (you may need to push the safety button located on or in the lock face, use a screwdriver and not your finger !) if the lock operates then the problems are with the alignment of the door and it may just need adjusting. If the door does not lock then a new locking system may be required.

Try the track test.
Run you finger along the patio door track. Is it smooth or bumpy ?
If it’s smooth then new wheels should cure the problem.
If it’s bumpy the track has been damaged and a survey will be required to determine the extent of the damage.
